March 2013 Newsletter Update

                         March 2013 Newsletter Update

Today I had the opportunity to meet with a couple of great volunteers at Harrington Beach State Park.  The planning for upcoming events was so much fun and their enthusiasm only helped me get more excited about the coming summer season.

Annual Meeting:  The annual meeting will be held on Thursday, April 25, 2013.  Sign in and dinner at 6:30 p.m. with the business meeting at 7 p.m.   Come enjoy a dinner and visit with others who truly love the park.   We will update you on the cabin project, vote for board members and share volunteer opportunities with all in attendance.  Please contact Nancy Hise at or 920-915-1595 to let us know if you will be attending.

Annual Volunteer Day:  Saturday, April 27, 2013  This year we will be planting trees and posting new trail signs.  We will be working from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.  Come for all or part of the day.  Lunch will be provided for all volunteers.  Please call Ranger Andrew Krueger at the park office at 262-285-3015 if you plan to work so he will have an accurate count for lunch.

Pancake Breakfast:  The annual breakfast in the park will be held  on Sunday June 2, 2013.  This is also Open House day at the park so a park sticker will not be required to enter the park.  Come enjoy pancakes, sausage, apple sauce, coffee and milk.  This event is a fundraiser for the accessible cabin.

Treasures of Oz:  This year the Quarry at Harrington Beach State Park will be one of the featured stops for the Treasures of Oz event.  This will be on Saturday, June 15, 2013.   You will NOT need a state park sticker to enter the park on this day.

Summer Events:  It is official, Robin Miller will be administering a Monarch Butterfly project in August.   She has also planned many great programs throughout the summer.  We also have a group who will be starting a Purple Martin project in the park.  Watch for the house to go up.

Camping:  The camping season is just 1 month away.  If you have never been there, you need to check our campground out.  Are you looking for a great place to stay with family and friends?  Check out the Group campsite.  As in the past, firewood and ice will be available for sale at the Park Office.

Concession Stand: The concession stand will be opening Memorial Day weekend.   I would like to thank Bob and Karen Helminiak for managing the concession stand these last 3 years.  Your service has been so appreciated.  I would like to welcome Tara Kos as the new manager.   I am looking forward to working with her and our volunteer concessionaires this year.

Adolph and Marie Ansay Welcome Center:  Do you have a graduating senior, upcoming wedding or planning a family reunion?  The Welcome Center may be just what you need.  It is available for rent on a daily basis.  Call the park office at 262-285-3015 to check its available dates and/or to reserve the building.

The board and I are looking forward to seeing many of you at the annual meeting on Thursday, April  25, 2013.

February 2013 Update

I am sitting in my home on this early March morning listening to the birds outside.  So much noise and a sure sign the winter is coming to an end and spring will soon be here.  How exciting to have a state park filled with so much beauty this close to my home.   I think I will write this recap of our February meeting quickly as a nice walk in the park is on my mind!

Annual Meeting:  The annual meeting will be held on April 25, 2013.  Sign in and dinner at 6:30 p.m.with the business meeting at 7 p.m.   What is on the agenda?  We will be updating you on the cabin project, giving you the opportunity to volunteer for activities that are of interest to you and voting for board members.  I think the last item is most important.  Our board is made up of people with a desire to do what is best for Harrington Beach State Park and its visitors.  Are you one of those people?  Please leave your name and number at (262) 285-3015 so we can get together and discuss your desire.

Annual Volunteer Day:  I don’t think there is anything more fun that working together with others on something you truly care about.  A work day from 9:00am to 3:00pm on Saturday April 27 is planned to plant new hiking trail signs and trees among other property improvement projects. A lunch will be provided to volunteers.

Treasures of Oz:  This year the Quarry at Harrington Beach State Park will be one of the selected stops for the Treasures of Oz event.  This will be on June 15, 2013.  This will be a day you can enter the park without a state park sticker.

Summer Events:  Keep an eye out for this section.  Robin Miller has  been working on making plans for our summer interpretive programs.  I am looking forward to seeing and sharing the schedule with you!  I will give you a hint, a request was made to the board for a Monarch Butterfly program.  My thought is you will soon hear more!

Financial Update:  We currently have $78,539 on deposit.  Of this, $56,420 is reserved for the cabin project.  With the $20,000 grant we have $76,420 for  the construction project and should soon hear back on our request for another $20,000 grant.

Our next scheduled board meeting is March 28, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the Adolph and Marie Ansay Welcome Center.   Our meetings are open so we hope to see you there!

Introducting Robin Miller

Introducing Robin Miller - Ranger at Harrington Beach State Park

Robin Miller is the newest member of Harrington Beach State Park hired in September 2012.  She graduated Concordia University with a BA in Criminal Justice.  Her primary interest at Harrington is to promote educational interpretive programming highlighting unique features of the park.  She will also be an active law enforcement ranger this summer.

Her passion to provide educational programming in 2013 will focus on a capture, tag and release program that tracks the movements of Monarch butterflies.  She is already working to schedule experts to teach park visitors and campers about Wildlife, Stonehaven Quarry History and many other popular programs held in the past.

The Friends of Harrington Beach State Park welcome Robin and encourage you to stop in the office and get to know the newest member of the park staff.

In the future we will highlight members of the staff giving you an opportunity to know more about the people that make your park an engaging and fun place to visit!
