Friends of Harrington Beach

January 2013 Monthly Updates

Looking for something to do?

Staff/Volunteer Party:  Invitations are going out for the annual Staff/Volunteer Party.  DATE HAS CHANGED TO JANUARY 19, 2013.  FORMAT HAS ALSO CHANGED AS DINNER WILL BE PROVIDED, NOT A POT LUCK! This year we will be doing a Murder Mystery dinner.  Sorry but this one is invitation only.  Do you want to be invited to the 2014 party?  There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer and be added to the invite list for next year.  Be sure to check out joining the Friends of Harrington Beach State Park by opening the Membership Form on the Home or About tab.

February Candlelight Ski/Hike:  Saturday, February 2, 2013 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.  Like the January hike, come enjoy a quiet walk around the quarry and the trail lit by Tiki torches.  Stop in the Welcome Center!  The Friends of Harrington Beach State Park will have free coffee, apple cider and cocoa to drink along with bars and cookies.  There will also be chili and hot dogs for sale.  The Northern Cross Science Foundation will have the telescopes up for night viewing at Pucketts Pond if the skies are clear.  If the skies are overcast, members of Northern Cross will be there to answer all your astronomy questions.  If you would like to help, please call Ronnie Morgan at 262-285-3803.  Some volunteer opportunities include:

·   Setup Tiki torches (done late morning or early afternoon)

·   Takedown Tiki torches following the event

·   Bake bars or cookies to be served at the event

·   Serve food

HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

Annual Meeting:  The annual meeting will be held on April 25, 2013.  Sign in and dinner at 6:30 p.m. with the business meeting at 7 p.m.

Packer Party/Fundraiser:  Thank you to all who volunteered, donated and/or attended the Packer Party we held December 2, 2012 at the Belgium Community Center.  We raised over $2,000 for our Accessible Cabin.

Treasures of Oz:  Each year Treasures of Oz showcases several unique "treasure sites" in the county, using an open-house format with docents and exhibits at each location. The event is free and open to the public. The event's purpose to engage people in learning about the natural gems of the area and encouraging them to fall in love with Ozaukee's natural resources.
Quarry Lake will be one of the featured sites for the event on Saturday, June 15th, 2013. The Friends of Harrington Beach will be providing history and stories about this wonderful place. Other treasure opportunities this year include the Cedarburg Bog Field Station's boardwalk, Blue Heron Wildlife Preserve, and five more, some never opened to the public before 2013.

Treasures of Oz's website is an adventure in itself. Under "treasures" is not only a listing of all of Ozaukee's parks and preserves, but maps to get there, photos and more. You can find outdoor activities listed by types, or by locations under "recreation." There are water trails as well as hiking trails mapped out. There are links to and information on all of the environmental organizations and recreational opportunities in the county as well as a full calendar of events. The photo galleries are outstanding. Go explore the site at www.treasuresofoz.org.

Financial Update:  Speaking of the cabin, we now have $75,000 in donations and grants for the construction of the cabin.  We are waiting to hear on a grant application submitted in November and continue to fund raise.  If you would like to give toward this project we have made it easy for you.  Just click on the “Donate” button on our website.  We are a nonprofit organization.

Our next scheduled board meeting is February 28, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the Adolph and Marie Ansay Welcome Center.   Our meetings are open to membership at large so we hope to see you there!

Friends Events Monthly Update ~ Nov 2012

It is that time of year again.  The one that requires winter coats, hats, gloves and window scrapers.  Sometimes you just want to stay inside by the fire with a cup of hot cocoa and relax.  Let the cold and snow stay outside!  Of course, if I stay inside I miss out on all of the fun winter activities in Wisconsin.  I think I will first enjoy the activities and savor the hot cocoa in front of the fire in the evening.  What has happened and what will be happening since our last update?  Read on!

Belgium Christmas Parade:  The parade is held each year the Sunday after Thanksgiving.  This year the sky was clear and the night cold. Bob and Mary Burant with the help of Morrie Morgan and Andrew Krueger decorated the shuttle.  I must say, it looked beautiful and the riders had a great time throwing candy to the people watching the parade.  Afterwards we watched the children talk to Santa and Mrs. Claus while we warmed up by the bonfire and enjoyed a bowl of chili and hot cocoa.

Packer Party/Fundraiser:  December 2, 2012 we will be holding a Packer Party at the Belgium Community Center.  Doors open at 11:00am.  The game will be televised at noon.  Entry fee of $5 per person will cover the
cost of non-alcoholic beverages.  There will be a cash bar available.  Hot dogs, hamburgers, brats, pizza and salad will be for sale.  Kids 5 and under attend FREE! The committee has collected awesome prizes for raffles and a Silent Auction including a signed Aaron Rogers helmet plus other Packer attire.  You need not be present to win.  If you can't attend and want to donate, please go to our website Friends of Harrington Beach State Park and donate through PayPal.  Hope to see you there!

Save the Date:  January 12, 2013 will be the annual staff and volunteer appreciation dinner.  It will be held at the Adolph and Marie Ansay Welcome Center.  More details to follow.

Wintry Wishes. May this season bring you the gifts of peace, hope and joy.

October 2012 Newsletter Updates

Today my family worked at the task of storing the summer furniture and toys for the winter.  It reminded me of the stories I read as a young girl about animals preparing for their winter hibernation.  I got to thinking it might be nice to hibernate in my warm home rather than be outside.  Of course, if I do that for the next several months, I will miss out on the many wonderful things available in Wisconsin.  What is ahead?

Belgium Christmas Parade:  It is hard to believe but Thanksgiving is just around the corner.  Bob Burant is looking for volunteers to help decorate the shuttle.  Please call the park office at (262) 285-3015 if you would like to help.  The parade will be held on Sunday, November 25 and the shuttle has room for riders.  Don’t eat beforehand as there is chili and hot cocoa in the village park following the parade!

Packer Party/Fundraiser:  We are getting closer all the time to the funds needed to build the Accessible Cabin.  December 2, 2012 we will be holding a Packer tailgate party at the Belgium Community Center.  The admission fee will get you hot dogs, brats, hamburgers, chips, pasta & potato salads, & desserts. Soda & coffee are also included and a cash bar is available.  Watch the website for more information on this event.

Candlelight Ski/Hike:  This will be held January 5, 2013 from 6 to 9 p.m.  Come inside the building for a bowl of chili and hot dog along with some great bars and cookies, hot cocoa, hot apple cider and coffee.  The Northern Cross Science Foundation will be there for night viewing, weather permitting..  If you would like to help bake for this event and/or serve, please call the park office at (262) 285-3015.

Save the Date:  January 12, 2013 will be the annual staff and volunteer appreciation dinner.  It will be held at the Adolph and Marie Ansay Welcome Center.

Accessible Cabin Update:  We have been actively working to raise funds for construction of the accessible cabin.  At this time we have about $40,000 cash in the account along with the approval of a $20,000 Knowles-Nelson Grant.  We are preparing the application for a second $20,000 Knowles-Nelson Grant.  Ken Matthews and I had the opportunity to be interviewed on The Morning Blend Milwaukee.  If you missed it and would like to see the episode, please go to http://www.themorningblend.com/videos/174596061.html .  If this project interests you, please let us know by calling the park office at (262) 285-3015.  Many hands make light work.

Website:  Be sure to check the website  www.friendsofharrington.org for new pictures and information on upcoming events.  We will also update the site should any event need to be cancelled due to inclement weather.

Welcome Center:  I find the idea of sitting around the fire place with friends and family so appealing in the winter time.  I think the one in the Adolph & Marie Ansay Welcome Center is beautiful and there is room for great group events.  For just $150 you can rent the Adolph & Marie Ansay Welcome Center for the whole day.  If you are a member of the Friends of Harrington Beach State Park, rental is only $135.  Call the park office at (262) 285-3015 to reserve it for your next party!

Our next scheduled board meeting is January 24, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the Adolph and Marie Ansay Welcome Center.   Our meetings are open so we hope to see you there!
