Monthly Update of Friends Events ~ August 2012

Have you ever felt like you were “out of the loop”?  How about “everyone knows what is happening but me”?  Well, the Volunteer Board of Directors of the Friends of Harrington Beach State Park would like to change that.  Starting this month, we will begin sending you notes from the meeting and highlight upcoming events.  Let’s get started!

·   Setup Tiki torches (done late morning or early afternoon)

·   Takedown Tiki torches following the event

·   Serve and/or talking to visitors during the event

Accessible Cabin Update

The Accessible Cabin Committee had an active 2011 and will expand our efforts in 2012 to meet our goal of raising the $150,000 required by the DNR before groundbreaking can commence in 2013.

To date, we have raised approximately $30,000 in donations. In addition, we have an in-kind commitment for all of the engineering work!

We have recently received approval of a $20,000 Knowles- Nelson Stewardship grant, bringing our total funds to nearly $55,000. Two additional yearly $20,000 grants will be requested.

Since these are matching grants, we need the funds to “match” the $20,000. To help in this endeavor we are planning another Pancake Breakfast in the park on June 3,2012, as well as another raffle. We are also distributing several cabin donation boxes throughout the area.

Our website is being updated to provide up-to-date status of the cabin fundraising and construction progress. You may also find updates on our Facebook page: Friends of Harrington Beach State Park.

Finally, we welcome volunteer support with experience, skills and interest in the various construction trades required to build this cabin in 2013/14. Please contact Andrew Krueger at (262) 285 -3015 to schedule a meeting with him and/or Neil Kraemer and learn more about this project.

Puckett’s Pond Shelter Update

Another Friends improvement at the park!

The Friends of HBSP, with the help of a Knowles-Nelson Matching Grant, have expanded and partially enclosed the shelter at Pucketts Pond. This improved facility will provide an outdoor venue for presentation of our popular Interpretive Programs during the camping season. Look for a schedule of programs to come out soon. The Friends also purchased a video projector with the ability to offer large screen presentations. As with the Welcome Center and other shelters, Pucketts Shelter is available for day rental. Contact the park office @ 262-285-3015 to reserve today.

Family campground

Harrington Beach State Park has a 69-unit family campground including five walk-to sites, a group campsite, an accessible cabin and a kayak site. 31 sites have 50 amp electrical hookups (no per site water and sewer hook-ups), 33 non-electrical sites and five walk-to sites.  Five of our non-electric sites in the 200 loop are first-come, first-serve non-reservable sites.  For more information on the non-reservable sites, call the park office at 262-285-3015.  Each campsite has a campfire ring and a picnic table.

The campground is open from the first Wednesday in May into October. During the warm weather season, showers, flush toilet and family shower rooms are available in the family campground. A trailer dump station and a fresh water fill-up station are available near the entrance to the campgrounds.
