June 2013 Newsletter Updates

Our monthly board meeting was attended by some great volunteers.  It was wonderful to hear their ideas as we plan for the future and review the past.  Let’s see what is behind and what we have planned for the future.

Treasures of Oz:  Quarry Lake at Harrington Beach State Park was one of the featured stops for the Treasures of Oz event on June 15th.  The day started out cloudy, wet and cool which didn’t look good for attendance.  What a pleasant surprise to have the weather turn beautiful on time for the event.  Elaine Nulph shared the history of the park that day and met many new people to the park.

Summer Events:  There are events planned for almost every weekend and keeping  up with them can be hard.  In order to make it easier for you, we have a calendar of events on our website at www.friendsofharrington.org.  If you are a Facebook user and would like to receive event invitations, please “Like” us at http://www.facebook.com/FriendsOfHarringtonBeachStatePark?fref=ts.

Monarch Butterfly:  We have the nets, the butterflies and the space but are short one thing… you!  Come help us catch, test them for the OE virus, tag them and then release them back in the field.  Training for this project will be held the day of the event before going out in the field.  The project will be held on August 17 and 31.  You don’t want to miss this one!  This project is funded in part by a 2013 Affinity Naturalist Grant.

Camping:  Camp Hosts play a vital role in our campground.  They camp in the park one month at a time, doing routine maintenance at the sites and visiting with the campers.  We wish to thank Irv and Arlene Brandt for their work here in June.  We are looking forward to Al and Alice Hintz joining us for the month of July.

Firewood and Ice Sales:  For your convenience, firewood and ice is for sale in the park at the Park Office.  The best part of purchasing your firewood and ice from us is all the proceeds are used by the Friends of Harrington Beach State Park for park improvements.

Concession Stand:  The concession stand is more than a place to get soda or ice cream.  It is staffed with volunteers who love the park and can answer many of your questions.    Be sure to stop by the stand to say hi, get something to snack on and just visit with the volunteers.  Like the Firewood and Ice Sales, all proceeds are used by the Friends of Harrington Beach State Park for park programs and improvements.

Adolph and Marie Ansay Welcome Center:  The Welcome Center may be just what you need for a family gathering or party.  It is available for rent on a daily basis.  Call the park office at 262-285-3015 to check its available dates and/or to reserve the building.

Cabin Update:  At the board meeting we learned we have raised almost $100,000.  We only need about $50,000 more.  If you would like to make a tax deductible gift, you can mail checks to Harrington Beach State Park, 531 County Highway D, Belgium, WI  53004.  Be sure to write cabin on the memo line.  You can also make an online donation at www.friendsofharrington.org.  The donation button is under the thermometer.

Our next board meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m. on July 25.  We hope to see you there!
